REMS Update: Prescribing Controlled Substances, Palliative Medicine, and End of Life Care


This update is provided to complement the CME activity titled Avoiding Risks While Managing Pain: Following the REMS Blueprint for Pain Management. This activity addresses the prescribing of controlled substances, palliative medicine, and end-of-life care, which together with above mentioned activity, fully meets the requirements for New York State Mandatory Prescriber Education.
Target Audience
Physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, pharmacists, podiatrists, and any healthcare provider who participates in the management of pain.

Learning Objectives
  1. Describe key regulations for prescribing controlled substances on the federal level and in New York State

  2. Address common misconceptions of opioid use in palliative care

  3. Develop a proactive and anticipatory treatment approach for patients at the end-of-life
